In this part I will just include some videos of longer term results of teaching ukemi using the structure I outlined in this ukemi series. It will include examples of some classes where we go into less constrained randori, to some students that end up competing without ever having done traditional ukemi drills and exercises. Reminder that the point of these examples is to show that one can safely do randori or compete, by learning to fall with only this kind of class structure. I have used this class structure for over 150 people but not everyone decides to compete or continue to the advanced class (regular randori).

This first video was recorded in the class following the last video in part 3. You will see some of the day 1 and day 2 people from last class returning to this class. This was the last two rounds of six rounds that we did at the end of class following similar class as you saw in part 3. Only difference was we skipped most of the beginning break fall (drop seoi) drills and went into nagekomi, ended up replacing that time spent on this constrained randori instead. We also did the same randori the following class but allowed people to finish the throws with lapel ippon seoi nage and also morote seoi nage(phone fell down flat while I was recording so no footage). The rules were to

  1. finish all throws standing

  2. no wrapping your leg around the other person

  3. sweep via tapping the ankles from the inside or outside

  4. throw via blocking the opponents shins

  5. and enter lapel side ippon seoi nage with chest to back contact.

In this video, I incorporated some basic grip fighting task goals with osoto gari. Counters with leg only osoto gaeshi is allowed. There are few day 2 or 3 people in here.

In this video, Oleg in blue is fighting another person (Jose) from our dojo at Winter Nationals. Oleg has been training Judo for ~80 hours at this point (came up in my class structure) and started with a BJJ blue belt experience. They have never trained together at this point since Jose has been training for 3 years at this point and is a BJJ purple belt so he attends the advance class, he has been awarded his brown belt 2 months after the tournament. Jose did not learn Judo with my class structure. After this tournament I gave Oleg his orange belt and he has stopped attending my beginner classes and only goes to the other classes.

Following videos are from Hollywood Judo’s inter dojo scrimmage. No one on our team in these example has any prior grappling experience. You can find the full videos on Hollywood Judo’s YouTube channel.

Seth (Red) has ~90 hours of class time here and this is his second competition. He has already started attending the advanced class at this point which does not have any ukemi instruction.

Jefferson (White in both videos) has ~50 hours of class time and first competition here and only attended my beginner classes.

Arnaldo (White in both videos) has ~250 hours and first competition. He has been attending the intermediate (no ukemi instruction) and beginners class.

River (White in both videos) has ~100 hours and this is his second inter dojo tournament. He has been attending the intermediate (no ukemi instruction) and beginner classes.

Both Shamil and Shan has ~100 hours of class time here and has competed multiple times and has been attending the advanced class

In the part 5 I will summarize the key points and goals of the series.
